With the rise of technology in the modern age, video games have become much more prevalent all over the world; in fact, we spend 3 billion hours per week as a planet with this form of entertainment. Due to the immersive nature of the medium, some are worried about the consequences of being exposed to a video game culture that isn't afraid to put violence in the hands of the player. This site will focus on and explore the delicate nature of human interaction through and influenced by video games and what that means for the general outlook on the industry itself.
Research has been done examining the link between video games and aggressive behaviors but varying results have been obtained. A key idea that I feel is lacking in many of these studies is that these studies tend to use a specific game and extrapolate results to all games. This over-generalization creates a stigma that is compounded by media coverage revolving around gaming's possible connection to violence.
I plan to build from this research and find out more about where this stigma really originates and why it continues to persist. I will be interviewing gamers and non-gamers alike of their thoughts on this stigma and how games may have a role in compounding violence. I also hope to discover what they believe regarding the role of games in other spheres, such as being used as enrichment tools, being seen as an art form, etc. Getting the common man's opinion on this topic will surely shed light on the underlying issue of what this stigma really is.
